Before Final Fantasy 16 released, TheGamer's Meg Pelliccio wrote an in-depth article about her time previewing Square Enix's medieval mainline RPG. Already, she was fangirling over Cid Telamon. Meg was hardly alone. From the moment Cid was introduced, fans were swooning something fierce. As it happens, the character isn't just a fancy bit of eye candy, superbly voiced by the unrivaled Ralph Ineson. He's also a fascinatingly complex fellow.

Two-and-a-half years after FF16's launch, and it's clear as crystal that the game's had a divisive reception. What else is new, one might ask, when it comes to post-Sakaguchi games; but the reasons behind the fanbase splits do tend to be different each time. In this case, the action-centric approach left some cold, and the darker storytelling isn't for everyone. That's a gross oversimplification, but there's no sense penning an essay on it now. On the other hand? The man, the legend, Cidolfus, has got to be one of the most universally beloved characters that Square has ever brought to life.
