The Switch 2 isn’t the only console setting sales records in the US, and the PS5 has just passed the lifetime sales of one of its predecessors.
Mat Piscatella of industry analyst firm Circana has released video game market data for September 2025, and one interesting fact is that the PS5 has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the PS3 in the US, and is close to passing its worldwide sales.
He also mentions that, in the US, the PS5 is trending ahead of where the PS4 was at a similar point in its lifecycle, and has been for some time.
We’ve known for a while that the PS5 has been very successful for Sony, but the new sales data puts it into clear perspective.
A Lucrative Console Generation
Back in September, Sony announced that the PS5 as a whole, including the whole console ecosystem, has been their most financially successful PlayStation generation, despite still being far behind the lifetime sales of the PS2, the highest-selling console of all time.
