That’s exactly what happened with “Spain at War”, an ambitious total conversion mod that transforms the old-time classic Call of Duty: World at War into a historically grounded game set during the Spanish Civil War.

Available on ModDB, “Spain at War” is far from a simple reskin. It actually reimagines one of Activision’s most iconic shooters as an entirely new conflict (one we rarely see explored in video games, by the way): the Spanish Civil War, which took place between 1936 and 1939.
By diving into its official page and reading its developers’ updates, it seems that the mod has been in development for more than a decade, starting as a multiplayer-only project that eventually evolved into its own single-player campaign.
