One of the most enduring mysteries to come out of Red Dead Redemption is the identity of The Strange Man, an elusive figure who appears on a clifftop to test John Marston's morality.
He muses that he's a sort of "accountant", sparking theories that he might be Death incarnate. Others believe him to be God, Cain, an Angel of Judgment, Charon, the Grim Reaper, or even the souls of those who died in the Blackwater Massacre.
But one of the more popular theories is that he's the Devil in a suit and tie, bartering at the crossroads with desperate townsfolk.
According to Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, the mind behind Red Dead Redemption, that theory is pretty close to the truth.
"He came out as I was trying to come up with ideas for [Strangers] as just this weird character, and then we built a bit into the story where he would unlock as you worked through and be a commentary on what you were doing," Houser explained on the Lex Fridman Podcast.
