Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a behemoth. It's officially the fourth best-selling game of all time, behind Minecraft, GTA 5, and Wii Sports, sitting pretty on 69.56 million units sold. In February of this year, eight years after it launched, the game was still outselling almost every other first-party title on the original Switch. Its record is in jeopardy, though.
Nintendo has just released its latest sales reports, revealing that Mario Kart World is far outpacing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's early sales numbers.
Part of why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold so well is its longevity. The original Nintendo Switch has now sold over 154 million units, and over the years, as new players picked up a console, Mario Kart has been seen as a must-buy. Mario Kart World has seemingly taken that baton and run with it.
Within its first 12 months, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had sold 9.22 million units. Mario Kart World has sold 9.57 million units as of September 30, 2025. That means, World has sold more in four months than 8 Deluxe did in a year, with the Switch 2 title significantly outpacing its predecessor.
Of course, at launch, Mario Kart 8...
