Square Enix Begins Massive Layoffs As Part Of 'Restructuring'

Square Enix, one of the biggest names in the video game industry, is currently undergoing mass layoffs that could impact up to 100 employees.

According to an internal presentation, the company is undergoing a reorganization of its overseas organizations. In short, they're looking to focus more on local development in Japan at the cost of its publishing efforts in places like the United States and the United Kingdom, where all the affected employees reside.

The presentation highlights three pillars of transformation for the company:

Essentially, Square Enix is reducing the HD Games publishing organization from 11 divisions down to 4, as indicated by the chart below.

Here's an explanation from Square Enix:

Management of franchises previously overseen by overseas (non-Japanese) development studios will become globally integrated. Additionally, development support functions and personal allocation in Japan and abroad are going to be reviewed "from the perspective of overall Group optimization."
