The Outer Worlds 2's Dialogue System Was Originally Way More Complicated, But One Conversation Took Six Months To Develop

The Outer Worlds 2 has, in my opinion, the best dialogue system in an Obsidian game yet. Like Fallout: New Vegas, a range of different skills can help you out when you're talking to someone, not just your Speech stat. Unlike New Vegas, some dialogue options will only appear if you gather pieces of information before the conversation, or have certain companions with you.

However, it was actually going to be even more complex than that. Speaking with Polygon, The Outer Worlds 2 director Brandon Adler reveals that this information-gathering system was going to be far more expansive, with players creating dossiers on NPCs to help them in conversation.

"Leonard [Boyarsky], me, and Brian Hines, who was the content director at the time, were all talking about how reactive we wanted the game to feel, but also how we wanted the player to be encouraged to really explore the world around them," says Adler. "In all, or many, of the game's major encounters, you were gonna have to explore the world and find information, and then you'd be able to use that inside of conversations."
