Genophage Cure, Intergalactic Plague, Time Travel: The Theories Behind Mass Effect 5's Krogan Civil War Art

Another N7 Day, another cryptic Mass Effect 5 clue. There's still no sign of the game, so we're yet again discussing a bread crumb. But it's at least an interesting bread crumb: a Krogan civil war.

We don't know what they're fighting over, just that the war takes place after Mass Effect 3, and that all of the cryptic clues thus far are still relevant and connected, which has sparked all kinds of theories.

These range from Genophage fallout to a new big bad stoking conflict across the galaxy to Liara donning a comically large multicoloured scarf and travelling through time.

Let's start with the most likely theory: the Genophage was cured in Mass Effect 3, and in the distant future (but not so distant that Liara would be dead), two factions have emerged. "One wants to go back to conquering, the other wants to integrate into society like Wrex planned," ipso facto, civil war.

The Genophage was a bioweapon deployed by the Turians that severely diminished Krogan fertility.

Granted, that would canonise a player decision, a big taboo among BioWare fans, but some have argued that the Krogan may have found out that the cure was sabotaged and...
