There have been plenty of 'GTA clones' over the years, from Watch Dogs to Sleeping Dogs to... a lot of dogs, apparently. We've also had Crackdown, Mafia, Just Cause, and of course, Saints Row, which took the gang warfare of San Andreas and built an entire franchise, spanning gritty street warfare, a presidential election, an intergalactic Matrix war, and even the depths of Hell itself.
While an undeniable success, boasting four games and numerous spin-offs, Saints Rows creator Chris Stockman admitted that no franchise will ever come close to the sheer cultural prowess of Grand Theft Auto. "You have to be something else," Stockman said on the FRVR podcast. "You can't compete with them anymore. You can't. It's impossible."
Stockman also claimed that any Western game trying to rival Red Dead Redemption would likewise fail.
Of course, while it's unlikely that we'll ever see another series match GTA, let alone surpass it, there's always room for a silver medal.
