Last month, Rockstar announced that new and updated versions of the original Red Dead Redemption would be released for current-gen consoles. The announcement confirmed that, "Current owners on PS4, Nintendo Switch, or the digital backward compatible version on Xbox One will be able to upgrade digitally for free."
With the game releasing today, however, things aren't running 100 percent to plan. Dozens of players on Xbox have complained that they're unable to upgrade their backwards compatible versions of Red Dead to the new shiny version, and Rockstar isn't helping either.
Since its launch, there have been dozens of complaints on the Red Dead Redemption subreddit, with players claiming they're unable to upgrade their legacy version of the game to the new version. Instead of being offered the free upgrade, they're being greeted with a cost $24.99.
One enterprising player, Frequent_Health_8113, contacted Rockstar Support looking for clarity, but this only made the situation more confusing. "Please note that the next-gen upgrade is not free for owners of the Xbox 360 version," they were told. "Backward-compatible titles do not automatically upgrade to next-gen version unless the publisher offers a free upgrade program."
