There aren't enough role-players playing role-playing games these days. That completionist itch in everyone's brain means few are willing to sacrifice content for roleplay's sake, and that's sad. Where are the strange, anti-social hermits with hearts of gold? Where are the self-righteous justicars, those who destroy everything to protect their faith?

At the very least, there's still one roleplayer out there. Famous Japanese director Mamoru Oshii—best known for Ghost in the Shell—has recently been in the news because of his obsessive love for Fallout 4, a game he's been playing for over eight years. In an interview with Automaton in 2017, Oshii revealed the bizarre code of conduct his in-game character lives by.

Oshii's character is a thin, bald man who scavenges and hunts the Wasteland's wildlife. The acclaimed director plays the game in a beautiful manner, not beholden to quest markers or seeking out overpowered items. It's a pure approach to role-playing, and is well-suited to a Bethesda-style RPG; games that tend to prioritise sandbox and immersive elements.
