The legendary action-adventure series Tomb Raider is set to return during Thursday's The Game Awards ceremony. This was initially revealed in the Fortnite map portal (because that's how we're doing game announcements now) before being posted to social media by Geoff Keighley, founder and host of The Game Awards.

"Lara Croft returns at The Game Awards," his post reads. "As just revealed in our The Game Awards Vote in Fortnite map portal, tune in on Thursday night for a look at the future of one of gaming's most iconic franchises. This is one you won't want to miss."

It's a bizarre reveal for one of the world's most famous game series, which still maintains pop-cultural relevance despite the lenghty periods of hibernation the series has experienced several times since its debut in 1996.

The intellectual property rights of Tomb Raider have changed hands numerous times, with Embracer Group's subsidiary Middle-earth Enterprises currently possessing these rights. Amazon Games has also been linked to an upcoming Tomb Raider game, under the stewardship of Embracer.
