It can be hard to pick a favorite from the Final Fantasy series, and a die-hard fan of Final Fantasy 10 probably wouldn't be bothered by claims that Final Fantasy 6 is still the best. Some games are traditionally more popular than others, however, and selecting a black sheep for the number-one spot is a lot more controversial.
According to FF7 Remake director Naoko Hamaguchi, that's now happening at Square Enix. In an interview with GamerBraves on YouTube, Hamaguchi reveals that some younger employees have started to name Final Fantasy 13 as their favorite game, a surprising pick that apparently makes Hamaguchi "feel the passing of the ages."
To be fair to Final Fantasy 13, it's always had its fair share of fans, and its critical reception was strong from the start. All the same, it tends to show up at the bottom of Final Fantasy lists much more often than the top. The game's highly linear approach is a turn-off for many fans, and the battle system is equally divisive. Final Fantasy 13-2 addresses some points of criticism, but none of the Lightning-focused games earned anything close to universal praise.
