The wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 has been painful, and as it turns out, there's a world where the game might already be out by now. A recent interview with the former loremaster of the Elder Scrolls games has revealed a lot about the behind-the-scenes workings at Bethesda, including an abandoned plan to start work on The Elder Scrolls 6 much sooner.
Speaking to PCGamer, ex-Bethesda employee Kurt Kuhlmann revealed that development of The Elder Scrolls 6 was originally intended to follow directly after Fallout 4. Instead, Bethesda ended up working on Fallout 76 and Starfield, the latter of which "became this extremely long project." Kuhlmann ended up leaving Bethesda after a different employee was selected to lead development of The Elder Scrolls 6.
According to Kuhlmann, Todd Howard originally promised him the role of leading The Elder Scrolls 6, and Kuhlmann shares some of the ideas he had in his back pocket in the interview. He imagined that "TES6 was going to be like The Empire Strikes Back," describing a scenario where the Thalmor ultimately triumph and leave the game on a cliffhanger to set up The Elder Scrolls 7.
