The Legend of Zelda 40th anniversary is underway, and fans are waiting to see what Nintendo has planned next, beyond a string of merchandise. The thing is, it might take a while before we actually see those plans come to fruition.

Based on fan speculation, 2028 could be the window for a new 3D Zelda. While we obviously need full confirmation from Nintendo at some point, we could see a title card as early as this year for the 40th anniversary.
A bit of history: it took Nintendo roughly six years to craft Breath of the Wild. Tears of the Kingdom, utilizing assets and concepts from its predecessor, took four years. If Nintendo decides to go for a brand-new engine and storyline, it could push them back to that six-year mark. Then you'd need to add time for marketing.
