Several improvements have been made to Nexon's The First Descendant with its latest 1.0.2 hotfix. Having launched earlier this month, The First Descendant is a free-to-play third-person live service looter shooter set in a futuristic world. The game offers a number of unique Descendants to choose from and unlock, and features a structure similar to that of Destiny, allowing players to grind, farm, and complete missions in multiple open zones.
It's an incredible challenge for new live service games to attain and maintain long-term success in the current state of the industry. As a new IP, it seems that The First Descendant has seen some moderate success so far, likely due to its unique roster of playable characters, solid third-person gunplay, and status as a free-to-play game. With that said, The First Descendant is not without its flaws. Many players feel the grind toward unlocking new Descendants is too long, and the game's monetization practices can feel overbearing, pushing players to purchase new Descendants outright instead of taking on the long grind.
It's the same style of debate that came with the release of Palworld, but perhaps with not quite as much publicity....
