Final Fantasy IX is beloved by fans of the franchise as one of the best games in the "classic" era of releases. As such, it's little wonder that attention has turned to the potential of a full blown remake from developer Square Enix, but it's all looking a little bit more murky than gamers would like.
Rumors of a remake for FFIX first started in earnest when the game was listed amongst a bunch of unannounced Square Enix projects, that were revealed to players as part of the infamous NVIDIA Geforce Now database leak of 2021. Since then, plenty of other games that also made up part of that list have turned out to be very real.
Those included the PC port of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kingdom Hearts IV, Bayonetta 3 and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, all of which have been either officially confirmed or fully released in the intervening period.
With all of that in mind, where is the Final Fantasy IX Remake? Well, Square Enix hasn't shared anything official, and the company is in a bit of a tough spot right now, laying off more than 100 people in November, 2025.
