Acclaim Brings The Harlem Globetrotters Back to Gaming with Super Basketball Classics

Six years ago, Basketball Classics hit Steam from Namo Gamo and now the team behind that retro-inspired game is back with a licensed property involved. Super Basketball Classics appears to blend the Harlem Globetrotters license with the core gameplay of Basketball Classics, but a revamped version of it. The original game featured a blend of Atari 2600-level player graphics with NES-style backgrounds and was an interesting "what if" kind of game given that it also allowed you to blend multiple eras of town-based rosters with a mix of strategic and arcade-style gameplay.

The iconic Harlem Globetrotters haven't been featured in a video game in decades and it's odd that we never saw them in something like NBA Street or even a mobile or Apple Arcade-style game given that it's a recognizable basketball brand without needing the NBA.

Historically-speaking, Acclaim had a similar approach to wrestling games when they lost the WWF license and instead made the Legends of Wrestling series with individual wrestler likeness rights instead of a whole company's rights and we're seeing a bit of that here, only without player licenses and with the Globetrotters branding.
