The Lord of the Rings is rightly considered by most to be the absolute grandfather of modern fantasy, with JRR Tolkien's beautiful and immensely deep creation serving as the foundation for basically any creation that has come since within the genre.
As such, it has also given us some brilliant video games over the years, like the perpetually underrated The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, a Final Fantasy-esque turn-based RPG that creates an entirely new narrative in parallel to the events of the books and films. In more recent times, Shadow of Mordor showed us the potential of an open-world formula, but that series has been on ice since the release of the sequel, Shadow of War.
The latter dropped all the way back in 2017, and given that it's been almost ten years, it really does feel like the right time for another LotR open-world game to enter the fray. Fortunately, there is one in the works, and it has been for a lot longer than many may have suspected.
