Fortnite Permanently Shutting Down Multiple Modes Following Mass Layoffs

Fortnite has been a powerhouse in the gaming industry for quite a while, morphing from a base-building game to an ubiquitous battle royale.

Sadly, Epic Games has just announced another round of layoffs. Despite a ton of crossovers and visibility, it seems like Fortnite isn't doing as well as Epic Games wants. Based on the official Fortnite X account, changes are coming to the game very soon.

Just this morning, Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney sent out a memo stating that the company is laying off 1,000 Epic employees. Citing reasons like "challenges delivering consistent Fortnite magic with every season" and "slower [industry] growth," Sweeney headlines the memo with the layoff announcement before pivoting to the path forward, including a reveal of an upcoming roadmap meeting to potentially right the ship.

It's hard to believe that something like this can happen to Epic Games, given how high-profile Fortnite is and the number of collaborations it secures, but in the gaming industry, no one seems safe. While the impact on Fortnite is nebulous at the moment, we do know that three modes will be removed from the game this year.
