The Norse God of War games did a great job of telling a cohesive and genuinely touching story arc, a narrative where Kratos was given a ton of depth as a protagonist, while other iconic characters rose up around him.

That said, the events of Ragnarök concluded that particular part of the story very well, and the God of War series feels like it's ready for a distinct next step. There's every chance that there could be a more subtle evolution, with a new world and faces to meet along the way, but talk is growing about a much more stark potential change, and it would be a significant risk if it were to prove true.

Over on Twitter/X, the user Pirat_Nation shared rumors which suggests that the next mainline game in the God of War series could replace Kratos. The post reads:

"A new God of War rumor suggests the series may continue with an Atreus-led game. According to recent reports, the next mainline title is expected to focus on Atreus and could release after the rumored Faye game, but before any remake project.
