Nintendo Switch Now Looking Unlikely To Become Best-Selling Console Of All Time

For a long time, the Nintendo Switch was expected to break the all-time console sales record, currently held by the PlayStation 2. For years, the Switch's sales numbers maintained an impressive momentum, but the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 has slowed sales of its predecessor significantly, making any record-breaking feat unlikely (nice spot, IGN).

According to Nintendo's latest financial report, the company only expects the Nintendo Switch to sell a further 2 million units over the course of the coming financial year. To date, the Switch has sold just under 156 million units. Another 2 million still leaves the Switch a couple of million sales shy of PlayStation 2's record of 160 million, with numbers decreasing year-on-year.

Though a mere 2 million seems pretty close in the context of how many consoles we're talking about, the release of the Switch 2 will continue to detract from the sales of the Switch. It's very unlikely that Nintendo will be able to find a couple of million sales in the coming years as we get deeper into the life cycle of the Switch 2.
