2K has laid off a number of employees at 31st Union, the studio currently working on free-to-play roguelike shooter Project Ethos, but studio head Ben Brinkman reckons things are still on track.
In an internal memo shared with Gamesindustry.biz by 2K itself, Brinkman says that while he's "never been more confident in the future of [Project Ethos]", staff cuts are necessary in order to "better align" with the current state of the game's development. He doesn't clarify exactly how far along Project Ethos is on that track.
It's also not clear exactly how many employees are losing their jobs; Brinkman says 31st Union is "parting ways with some valued colleagues", but he doesn't specify the number of staffers being let go.
I'm a little perplexed at the contradictory messaging being employed here, as I'm sure you will be as well. It's hard for me to fathom how studio leadership can be "more confident" in Project Ethos than ever before while cutting back staff numbers and reworking the game's direction.
Honestly, given how hostile the current climate seems to be when it comes to live-service games competing for your time and money, I wouldn't be...
