Remedy CEO Argues Launching Close To GTA 6 Will Help, Not Hurt Other Games

For the last two years, everyone in the games industry has been playing a big game of chicken with Grand Theft Auto 6, tiptoeing around release dates out of fear that Rockstar might suddenly careen into them and send them crashing against the floor.

Everyone except newly-appointed Remedy CEO Jean-Charles Gaudechon, who has a bit of a unique stance compared to his peers. He argues that launching in proximity to GTA 6 will instead benefit other games.

"It's a year, I believe, that's going to raise the tide," Gaudechon said in an interview with The Game Business. "It's going to put the spotlight even more on games than maybe in past years. Hopefully [GTA] will sell consoles. And raise the tide for all the players out there."

It's an optimistic outlook when so many other devs are scurrying to escape from under GTA 6's enormous shadow, but there's some logic to Gaudechon's argument.

GTA 6 will undoubtedly entice last-gen players who have lagged behind to finally make the upgrade to current-gen, and while the Online mode will keep most entertained after the story, many of these players are likely to branch out and try new games afterward,...
