With Obsidian Making A New Fallout Game, Fans Hope That "Essential" NPCs Will Finally Be Dropped

Fallout 3 and New Vegas feel incredibly different to play. Despite both being made in the same engine with a lot of the same assets, the game design is worlds apart, giving you a very different experience when you go back to these classics.

One of the key differences is in how it tells its main story. Fallout 3 focuses on a few main characters, with the story being much more linear and personal to the player character, the Lone Wanderer. Because of this, some characters simply need to stay alive for the story to work - or die exactly when they’re supposed to - which is where Bethesda’s “essential” tag comes in.

Obsidian broke through all the static with Fallout: New Vegas. But it's just one of their games that stands out among their catalog.

Originating in Oblivion, the essential tag is given to characters who are too important to die. This means that you cannot kill them (at least during certain points in the game), and if you try, they just bounce back up again. This was carried over into Fallout 3 and Fallout 4.
