When it comes to Hollywood adaptations, the Resident Evil franchise has historically suffered from a painfully complicated relationship with the big screen. For nearly two decades, cinemagoers were treated to explosive and action-filled blockbusters that often felt miles away from the claustrophobic dread and resource-management tension that defined Capcom’s iconic survival horror series.
However, director Zach Cregger, best known for Barbarian and Weapons, is taking a drastically different path with his upcoming movie. And the latest trailer proves he has probably put many hours playing the games.
Nods and Mechanics Only Veteran Players Will Catch
Rather than attempting a beat-for-beat retelling of the main games' plots, Cregger's story takes a clever side-quest approach. Set quietly along the narrative margins of Resident Evil 2, the film follows Bryan (played by actor Austin Abrams), a medical courier who accepts a routine delivery run on the outskirts of Raccoon City.
As expected, things spiral out of control in catastrophic fashion, and Bryan finds himself trapped in a decaying, abandoned farmhouse surrounded by aggressive creatures, turning a simple job into a desperate fight for survival.
