Remakes are cool and all, but demakes? There’s a real novelty to backporting a game to an older engine and seeing familiar characters and locales recreated with retro visuals, like a strange what-if? that scales back time.
I vividly remember seeing the early screenshots of the discontinued Half-Life 2 GoldSrc project, showcasing a functioning Gravity Gun that felt impossible given the archaic tech. Or the PSX demake of Bloodborne that reimagined Yharnam in the vein of its inspirations, Nightmare Creatures.
Thanks to OpenMW, a fan-made open source re-write of the Morrowind engine, that’s now possible with Bethesda games. And already, one Fallout fan is hard at work on reimagining New Vegas as an early '00s RPG.
