Stop Killing Games Comments on PlayStation's Decision to Kill Discs

Stop Killing Games has published a new post subtitled "A Story of Lies," outlining a timeline of recent events surrounding the movement and how they may relate to PlayStation's decision to discontinue discs. The community-backed movement began in 2024 after Ubisoft shut down The Crew, but it has since become a major force in gamer-led efforts to protect consumer rights, including the ongoing controversy surrounding PlayStation's no-disc policy.

Stop Killing Games managed to collect over a million verified signatures for its petition, prompting EU commissioners to raise the issue in Parliament. However, according to the movement's official statement, a lobbying group representing major game developers, including Ubisoft, allegedly convinced the EU to reject Stop Killing Games' proposal.

Former GTA lead writer Dan Houser voices support for physical games, but while pointing out there's a reason digital media keeps gaining ground.

On July 27, the Stop Killing Games movement's Twitter account proposed four possible reasons why PlayStation is moving away from physical discs. According to its official statement, Sony "doesn't want resales." It also claims the company is trying to prevent "unidentified use" of its games and opposes "true ownership" because it limits Sony's control over the market....
