The world of Pokémon is no stranger to iconic figures who have left an indelible mark on the franchise's decades-long history and in the gaming industry as a whole. Yet, very few artists have managed to reshape its visual identity in the modern era quite like James Turner.

As the first Westerner to design pocket monsters for Game Freak, his distinct artistic flair and creative leadership helped define multiple generations of games. Now, after a brief hiatus from creature design to co-found an independent studio and launch one of the most charming indie games of recent years (the lovely The Plucky Squire), Turner has officially returned to the franchise that made him a household name – but this time, in a slightly different way.

From Unova Monsters to Studio Leadership

Taking to social media, Turner confirmed that he has joined The Pokémon Company as the new Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design.
