After years of mounting cynicism regarding Ubisoft’s heavy reliance on microtransactions and intrusive monetization of their games, it’s no wonder why fans were apprehensive about the future of the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six franchise—one of the publisher’s flagships that attracts hundreds of thousands of players daily.
Many fans believe that Ubisoft essentially doomed its own successful Rainbow Six Siege title, a tactical shooter built around team-based combat, with paywalls and overbearing in-game microtransactions from day one. As the game aged, Ubisoft sought to squeeze every last dime out of players with battle passes, cosmetics and time-skip options—although it did eventually offer a free-to-play version of the game with access to only core gameplay modes.
However, Ubisoft is seemingly trying to turn its vampiric image around with the announcement of Rainbow Six Tactics, a turn-based tactical game akin to XCOM, which they recently shared during Gamescom.
