During a tech conference, a Capcom studio programmer confirmed that the long-term goal for the RE Engine is for it to become an “AI-generation game engine”.
I probably don’t need to tell you that Capcom has unarguably been one of the most successful and productive developers over the last few console generations. Ever since Resident Evil 7 revitalised the studio, it hasn’t really taken a wrong step thanks to gems like Pragmata, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and nearly every single Resident Evil game.
Except for Resident Evil 3’s remake, of course, but even Capcom seems to know that was a miss.
One of the big reasons for Capcom’s success is its in-house RE Engine, which has been used for all of the studio’s games since Resi 7. Although the RE Engine has clearly been a big driver for Capcom’s winning streak, it sadly sounds like it’s headed in a bad direction, as the studio has plans for it to heavily integrate AI technology.
Although a growing number of developers over the past year and a bit have admitted to using AI in some form during development, it’s still seen as a bit of a taboo...
