So far, Infinity Ward has kept tight-lipped on what’s in store for Call of Duty’s take on extraction shooters with DMZ. Being so close to launch, the radio silence did provoke concerns from the community, but the developers are preparing to put that to rest by unveiling more of the highly anticipated mode.
Call of Duty has already experimented with squad-based extraction shooters in past entries, including Modern Warfare 2 (2022) DMZ Beta, a zombies extraction mode in Modern Warfare 3 (2023), and most recently, Endgame in Black Ops 7. All of these modes see you deploy onto an open-world battlefield with your squad, completing contracts, eliminating enemies, and extracting with your loot intact.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is expected to be a fully fleshed-out mode set in a living world, with high-stakes objectives. Activision says that, “after experimenting and getting player feedback from the original DMZ Beta, Modern Warfare 4 evolves the extraction shooter into a deeper, more cohesive, and more persistent combat experience shaped by what resonated most with players.”
