When subgenres become popular, many titles that try to iterate on their mechanics end up copying much of the original's presentation as well. Lords of the Fallen side by side with the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodstained next to Castlevania, good or bad, the thematic repetition can make these games feel less unique than they truly are.

Eventually, though, folks get creative, and One More Level's Valor Mortis is a fantastic example. More info was just released on the Napoleon-era first-person Soulslike, including its 20+ hour base campaign, weapon selection, and movement. Carrying on the lessons learned from their time on Ghostrunners, Valor Mortis is primed to be another big hit from One More Level.

Rushing Through Level by Level

Despite the time jump from the far-flung future to the devastated battlefields of the Napoleonic Wars, Valor Mortis is primed to maintain much of what made Ghostrunner so satisfying to play, while adding extra weight and deliberation to the combat. Fights are more methodical, and the shift to a Soulslike means every action needs to be carefully considered.
