Fallout 76 Characters Will Treat You Differently If You're A Ghoul

Fallout 76 is getting playable Ghouls next year, finally giving us one of the most sought-after features in the series' history. Ever since the originals, fans have wanted to be able to play as a Ghoul, so a lot is riding on Fallout 76 getting it right.

In an interview with TheGamer, Fallout 76's creative director Jon Rush sheds more light on how playable Ghouls will work in the game. Here, Rush is eager to stress that Ghouls offer much more than an aesthetic change, with NPCs around the map reacting to your transformation.

"For future story updates or new content going in, where you're interacting with NPCs and making decisions, being a Ghoul is going to be taken into account," says Rush, speaking to me at Gamescom. "That will absolutely be a factor. Things will be different if you're a Ghoul."

It remains to be seen what this means in practice, but from the sounds of it, the devs are taking Ghoul-prejudice into account when writing future expansions. In the mainline games, we've constantly seen the Ghoul population of the wasteland be treated differently based on how they look, with some settlements banishing them altogether.
