Sea of Thieves is getting in the Halloween spirit with today's new update, Fort of the Damned. The update alters Old Boot Fort to its titular, terrifying iteration and challenges players to defeat Shadow of Fate Skeletons with their corresponding lantern lights, which players can acquire by visiting the Ferryman (also known as dying) in a number of ways. This makes playing the new fort solo an all but impossible challenge, and it's once again Rare's intent to get pirates to work together across multiple crews. You'll also need Ritual Skulls, which arrived in an update over the summer. If you are low on them, Duke is offering quests that reward you with more.
Alongside that featured event come a host of other changes. The Pirate Emporium now offers skeleton pets for the season, while the Black Market and outpost merchants now have more clothes too, particularly a stronger variety of items for female pirates—or just those pirates who feel good in a dress. Musically-inclined raiders can now join in with a banjo too, which is added automatically to all players' radial inventories, while new cosmetics for the instrument can be found at every outpost.
Cosmetic rewards also come by way of completing the Fort of the Damned. This time, it's a new Ferryman face paint, his jacket, and his lantern that you'll earn for good when you've felled the final Shadow of Fate skellie and completed its list of challenges. For the PVP players, duo sloops have come to Arena mode. This allows teams of two to partake in Sea of Thieves' most competitive mode for the first time.
Other quality of life updates have come along in the lengthy patch notes too, like the on-island appearance of pirate captains outside of Order of Souls missions. A wide range of fixes big and small also solidify what is Sea of Thieves' most diverse update since May in its monthly content update schedule. The Fort of the Damned update requires 4.48 GB on Xbox One, 7.54 GB on Xbox One X, and 6.77 GB on PC.
