Half-Life: Alyx has been officially revealed, and will drop for PC in 2020.
Half-Life: Alyx is a VR exclusive title that will release in March 2020. The game will put players in the shoes of Alyx Vance, lining up with rumors from earlier this week. The game has been designed from the ground up for VR, and will use the Source 2 engine. The title will feature all the hallmarks of a Half-Life title: exploration, puzzle solving, combat, and an intricately woven story.
Half-Life: Alyx will take place between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. It will tell the story of Alyx and her father Eli, as they form a resistance against an alien force called the Combine. Alyx will use Gravity Gloves, which will pull things toward her. She will have access to other weaponry as well, as the game's trailer shows her using a gun.
Half-Life: Alyx will cost $59.99 when it drops in March. Those who own Valve's Index VR headset will get the game for free. The upcoming title will be compatible with all PC headsets, including the Valve Index, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality.
"Everyone at Valve is excited to be returning to the world of Half-Life," stated Valve founder Gabe Newell in a press release. "VR has energized us. We've invested a lot of ourselves in the technology. But we're also game developer at heart, and to be devoting ourselves to a VR game this ambitious is just as exciting.
"For that to come in the form of Half-Life feels like the culmination of a lot of things we care a lot about: truly great games, cutting edge technology, and open platforms. We can't wait for people to experience this."
Rumors of Half-Life: Alyx first began earlier this week when an alleged interview between Geoff Keighley and Valve developers surfaced. That same day, Valve confirmed the existence of the game. Half-Life: Alyx may not be Half-Life 3, but it will at least throw us back into a world that we have been waiting to play in again for quite some time.
