It has been a busy couple of days at FromSoftware, as the Japanese studio works to manage expectations and keep players informed after the bombastic announcement of Elden Ring: Nightreign during The Game Awards.
As with any game that leans so heavily on cooperative multiplayer, people started to wonder whether there would be some good news for groups of friends split across different platforms.
To prevent any rumors from getting out of hand, FromSoftware game director Junya Ishizaki came out today to clarify that no, there will not be cross-play between platforms.
According to Ishizaki, Nightreign will follow a similar system to the original Elden Ring title.
This allows players in the same family of consoles to play together independent of generation, despite not having access to other types.
In Ishizaki's words, "PS4 players can play with PS5 players, and Xbox One players can play with Xbox Series S and X players, but not between platforms".
Albeit this was expected, it is nonetheless disappointing news, in an era when even some executives behind the consoles have taken a more amicable tone towards competitors.
