Gaming Nexus's Reviews

Originally a homebrew Genesis role-playing game, Pier Solar and the Great Architects has made the leap from 16-bit to the modern age. While the presentation is spot on, the gameplay is marred by combat that seems to favor the enemies. Couple this with obtuse puzzles and an aimless story and you have an adventure game that is good, but doesn't stack up to the best games in the genre.

Overall, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare lives up to the franchise's expectations. It looks, feels, and plays like a CoD game, and there's been quite a few additions to make Halo fans like me interested. They've done some work to make the game more welcoming to newcomers, and a lot of detail has gone into the single player campaign to make it as cinematic as a summer blockbuster. And despite a few hiccups, it plays a lot like one. If you already like Call of Duty, and you're a Halo fan to boot- you won't be disappointed by this installment in the series.

Even though it has a few annoying and erroneous elements and an uncompelling, cringeworthy story, Dead Rising 3 is still an incredibly fun game. If you're looking for something where you can turn your brain off and go ballistic- Dead Rising 3 is going to be a perfect fit for you.

8.5 / 10.0 - Chariot
Oct 28, 2014

Chariot is a decent adventure when you go solo, but an excellent one when you bring a friend. You'll definitely want to sit a partner down next to you to get the most out of this experience.

9 / 10.0 - Endless Legend
Oct 27, 2014

Welcome to the new king of fantasy turn-based 4X strategy. While not perfect, this game has achieved many of its lofty goals. A must-buy for any fan of TBS games, Endless Legends could put a dent in the sales of that other big game coming out soon. It is that good.

8 / 10.0 - Sunset Overdrive
Oct 26, 2014

Despite hitting a few speed bumps along the way, Sunset Overdrive's excellent and addictive gameplay are what stands out from the experience. It make take this gs a little while to get rolling but once the game hits its stride, you're in for one hell of a ride.

Another success in the line of Civ games.  It does a good job of setting the scene and taking the player along on a story of hope, struggle and triumph.  The ability to customize your side both before and during the game will lend itself to long debates over the "best " strategies.  Replayability and the inevitable mods and expansions will keep this on your hard drive for a long time.

2 / 10.0 - Fluster Cluck
Oct 20, 2014

I cannot recommend Fluster Cluck except as maybe a child's first couch co-op experience. If your 8 to 12-year-old is having a three-person sleep over and has no other PS4 games, then perhaps. Beyond that, give Fuster Cluck a hard pass.

7 / 10.0 - Anomaly 2
Oct 20, 2014

It's all about the multiplayer this time around in the Anomaly franchise. Anomaly 2's singleplayer portion is basically identical to the first game, so if that was your jam, then by all means, go weapons free. If it wasn't your jam, then maybe the multiplayer will keep you interested. Either way, there are fun and interesting gameplay ideas hidden away in Anomaly 2 that can keep you busy over a boring weekend.

Futuridium EP Deluxe is a sight to behold. It's a triumph of both art and style, with fast-paced gameplay and diverse level designs. The whole thing comes together thanks to the mesmerizing visuals and drum 'n bass soundtrack. It may have a simple premise, but this PlayStation 4 title is one of the most exciting space shooters of the year.

A year-and-a-half later and Castlestorm is still a complete blast to play. The added content and updated visuals round out an already stellar package. As long as you can get used to the controls, this is one that will keep you entertained time and time again.

8 / 10.0 - The Evil Within
Oct 13, 2014

It might not be the scariest game out there, but The Evil Within brings the scary and the tension. Unfortunately it trips over its feet in key places.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel isn't without its issues, but it's still a fun game.  Mostly everything about Borderlands 2 is present in The Pre-Sequel with a few changes, some good and some bad.  Overall though, with the excellent gameplay, somewhat higher difficulty and challenge, and the excellent dialogue and narrative by characters both old and new, fans of Borderlands 2 will likely get the same amount of enjoyment out of The Pre-Sequel.

9.5 / 10.0 - Bayonetta 2
Oct 12, 2014

Bayonetta 2 is a smashing success, and proves that the WiiU can be the home of some great core titles. Now if only the wait for those titles could be cut a little shorter. Savor this one though, because titles of this level of quality seem to be few and far in between right now.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition not only includes an updated version of the 2012 crime thriller, but also packs in all the downloadable content. While a solid collection, this port is marred by inconsistent frame rate, technical problems and a high price tag. We can argue about whether or not this is enough to warrant the $60 asking price, but there's no debate over the quality of Sleeping Dogs as an open-world action experience.

9.5 / 10.0 - DG2: Defense Grid 2
Oct 9, 2014

Defense Grid 2 is a very solid tower defense game.  While there are only twenty one missions, there are multiple ways to play each one as well as multiple difficulties to keep things fresh.  If you're into the genre, this one is worth picking up.  Even if you've never played a tower defense game before or are looking to get into the genre, this is a good one to start out on.

6.5 / 10.0 - Richard & Alice
Oct 2, 2014

In a game that brings a little of the very best of retro point and click gaming nostalgia and also some of it's worst, only a decent narrative and a big plot twist can save Richard and Alice from a far worse fate than living in an ice world.

Toys for Bob shows that they make better Skylander games than anyone. It's simple, fun, and there is an absolute crap-ton of things to do. Once again, I find myself completely engulfed in the Skylanders world and endlessly exploring these worlds with my daughter.

Smartly written dialogue, strong voice acting, and terrific graphics help make up for some technical flaws as well as a couple cases of that would offer little challenge to Sherlock Holmes.  A must play for Holmes buffs, but it's somewhat slow of pace so action seekers would be wise to look elsewhere.

Smash Bros for 3DS is a solid polish of everything that made Brawl great, but faster, tighter and with even more content. The new fighters and levels are excellent, the online play is smoother and more stable, and best of all, you can take the experience anywhere. Get ready to start the addiction all over again, because now you can carry it around in your pocket.
