Detroit: Become Human is complicated. It's a technological marvel with great performances and an entertaining narrative at its core. Kara, Connor and Markus are all given enough room to breathe as characters that you feel connected to all of them. I cared about where their stories would end.
If you've played Dark Souls before then there isn't really anything in this version of the game that makes for a compelling reason to part with your cash. The term ‘Remastered' implies that a great amount of work has gone into this release, and although it's a definite improvement – especially with regards to the frame rate – it isn't extraordinary.
Space Hulk: Deathwing – Enhanced Edition is an improvement on the original version, but still nothing more than a semi-decent co-op shooter chained to a ditchwater dull campaign.
This isn't my preferred genre of game, but I had plenty of fun playing Runner3 and am confident it will provide a sufficient challenge to fans of the BIT.TRIP franchise and genre.
Pillars Of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a truly superb RPG from the masters of the genre. Unlike, say, a Bethesda game or even The Witcher 3, this isn't an accessible entry point for curious newcomers; it's a game that demands the kind of attention and commitment that is rare in 2018. However, if you have that mindset – and the time – then you'll discover one of the deepest, densest and most rewarding Role Playing Games in years.
An improvement on the original, and with far more variety on offer, but State of Decay 2 suffers from repetitive combat and poor player communication throughout. Fans of survival sims will likely appreciate the greater attention to detail and increased demands when it comes to sustaining your communities, but for more casual players the constant need to find dozens of items or resources just to keep everything ticking over will just annoy, the longer you go on.
Whether you're an avid Zelda fan or casual Warriors player, there's something for you to love here. The Switch is the perfect console for a Musou experience since this game is best enjoyed in short bursts; prolonged spells almost reveal the secret of its magic, leading to a more laborious experience.
It's like a Katy Perry song, this one. You think you're immune from its charms and then all of a sudden you're humming it in the shower and singing while you drive. Battletech is so unforgiving and challenging that it really tickles the part of my brain that demands to win.
All in all, Warmind represents Bungie finally getting its PvP house in order after a rocky start, but this success comes at the cost of an underwhelming PvE offering. The campaign is a one-note run through a handful of missions that boil down to run here, kill dudes then throw a magic space javelin at more dudes for the big finale.
In fact, that pretty much sums up the game as a whole. It's a game of magnificent vistas and embarrassing glitches, epic ambitions and humdrum work. The world is vast and beautiful, yet filled with dumb animals and even dumber enemies. While never less than absorbing, it can be hideously annoying too.
Forgotton Anne is a fantastic narrative journey propelled by an exceptional heroine. The Enforcer is strong, capable and shrouded in mystery; a case you slowly uncover while discovering who she is and where she came from.
Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time lacks originality, but it's stuffed with colour and charm, bringing Luna Nova and its students to life with affection and humour.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is a game you've played before, but it's a blast nonetheless. The anime's outlandish storyline ties together neatly with the hectic fun of a Musou game, ensuring this is an appealing and meaty package. It's just a shame it doesn't take more risks with the tried-and-tested formula.
Battle Chasers: Nightwars is a damn good update to JRPGS of old, carrying the genre into 2018 without sacrificing what made it so appealing to begin with. The fact it's now portable on the Switch just makes it better still.
As far as local multiplayer games go on the current consoles, Super Mega Baseball 2 is a great option. If you've got Xbox Live Gold, then you can grab the game for free as part of the May lineup. Even if you're not a huge fan of the sport, it's well worth checking out.
Raging Justice is ridiculous fun which is, at its heart, just an updated version of Streets Of Rage. It's dumb, entertaining and well made, even if it can be horrifically hard.
The Swords of Ditto is an enjoyable RPG held back by its procedural world that hinders the potential creativity of dungeons and exploration.
Considering all the amazing Wii U games still yet to come to the Nintendo Switch, I could have happily seen Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze moved much further back in the queue. It's simply an average 2D platformer that doesn't deliver the level of fun or excitement you'd expect from a Nintendo-exclusive title – particularly one featuring some of the company's most iconic mascots.
Historical strategy isn't everybody's cup of tea, and this isn't the most broadly accessible historical strategy game. It plays to a niche of gamers who want more realism and in-depth management, and who like wrestling with the politics, warfare and complex challenges of a specific period and place. Even as someone who likes Total War, I wasn't sure whether I was having a good time for the first few hours.
Overwatch remains one of the most compelling and experimental shooters in the world right now. Blizzard Entertainment's commitment to innovative new heroes, modes and responding to community feedback is unparalleled – and a treat to watch.
