Grand Theft Auto V doesn't correct every mistake or misstep it made from its previous outing. There are still only three main protagonists in the game, all of which are male. The writing is still a bit hit or miss. Aiming and shooting while driving is still an exercise in frustration. However, the good aspects of the game far outweigh the bad. First-person mode is a tremendous addition to the game. The increased resolution and stable framerate are fantastic when compared to the old gen. The minimal pop in of objects is leaps ahead of the often-horrendous pop in of objects that often happened right in front of your face on the old gen. Grand Theft Auto V on the PlayStation 4 isn't perfect but it has certainly rekindled my love of the game.
Quite possibly the best "Souls" game to date, even surpassing the original, and much beloved, Dark Souls.
Just buy it. If you ever played the original two Doom games and/or Doom 64, then you owe it to yourself to buy DOOM right now.
The best team based multiplayer game since Team Fortress 2.
Without sounding too hyperbolic, SOMA is a better BioShock than BioShock managed to be. It nails the atmosphere and hits all of the notes that makes the story one of the best in the horror genre.
There is an awful lot to like with Yakuza 0 and it is hands down an easy purchase for anybody looking for a solid game that is just so much damn fun to play.
Nex Machina hits all the right notes with its modern twist on a classic gaming experience. Inspired by games like Robotron 2084 and Smash TV, Nex Machina combines the best elements of prior twin-stick shooters with impressive sci-fi visuals, an adrenaline pumping electronic soundtrack, tough as nails boss encounters, and a perpetual desire to play "just one more level." I dare say that Nex Machina is one of the best twin-stick shooters money can buy and one of 2017's finest games.
This is Guild Wars at its absolute best. ArenaNet has done an absolutely stellar job here. The visuals are fantastic. The already solid graphics and colorful spells complemented by gorgeous vistas throughout a number of varied and richly detailed environments. The story is thoroughly engaging from start to finish. Any reservations about the additions of mounts into the franchise should be tossed aside. Perhaps most importantly, ArenaNet learned from the mistakes in Heart of Thorns and addressed the biggest problem that plagued that previous expansion: the grind.
From start to finish, The Station had its hooks in me something fierce. Though a bit shorter than I would have liked, I was fully immersed for every single second of it. It managed to deliver a great story that kept me second guessing up until the very end. This was supported with a great presentation, solid visual design, fantastic audio work, and a handful of fun puzzles to solve.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 has proven to be the best entry in the franchise thus far. It manages to deliver on all fronts and is an absolute must play for action-adventure fans and especially for those that are fans of the previous games in the series.
Incredible from start to finish. Every once in a while there comes a new game release that defies all expectations. A Plague Tale: Innocence is one such game. Thanks to a delicate balance of satisfying gameplay and an engaging story, A Plague Tale will sink its hooks into you right from its opening chapters.
Judgment is so much more than a simple spin-off of the Yakuza franchise. It is a stellar title that offers a ton of memorable gameplay, an amazing story, and fantastic characters.
Persona 5 Royal is a master class in improving upon what is already great.
Half-Life: Alyx will go down as a watershed moment for VR gaming. Valve's years of work in VR are on full display here, featuring gameplay memories that will last a lifetime.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is an absolutely wonderful gameplay experience. There is just something undeniably magical about flying around and seeing sights that you may have only read about in a book or seen online. With so many of us still in quarantine and self-isolation, there has never been a more perfect time for this level of escapism.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is very nearly the perfect remake. Without a doubt this is the definitive version of both titles currently available. It is welcoming to those who have never played the game while being an immediate blast from the past with us old farts that spent their formative years playing these games for hours at a time.
FromSoftware's largest and most ambitious title is also its best yet.
The new release of Diablo 4 has exceeded expectations by providing an engaging and dark experience that fans of the franchise have been eagerly waiting for. With its improved gameplay mechanics, often stunning visuals, a wide range of multiplayer options, and extensive endgame content, Diablo 4 has cemented its position as one of the best action RPGs currently available.
From start to finish, Alan Wake 2 just kept delivering. It is modern horror done right. This is the game for horror fans, for Remedy fans, or simply for fans of the original Alan Wake. It is the game for those looking for something fresh that will delight and thrill in unexpected ways.
