Empire of the Ants is a welcome breath of fresh forest air in a genre that can always benefit from more nature-based simulators, and sets a well-earned standard for those looking to achieve a similar vision. The story is an enjoyable 20 or so hours inside a world that is fascinating to explore, and I think Bernard Werber would be proud of what Tower Five has accomplished.
A two campaign, spook filled jaunt through the most stereotypical American high school you can possibly imagine, complete with creepy drama teachers with theater lights for heads, fun puzzles, and a surprising level of emotional depth.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a game that walks the line between homage and innovation. Its deep connection to Persona and Shin Megami Tensei is clear in its mechanics and structure, and while at times it feels almost too similar to its predecessors, it ultimately carves out its own space with a compelling fantasy world and meaningful characters.
Featuring over 180 characters, limitless replay potential, and bombastic battle mechanics, Sparking! Zero is not only one of the year’s best games, but one of the best Dragon Ball games ever released.
Every twist and turn in the game had me excitedly working my brain for the most fun solutions I could think of, from building bridges out of beds to sending crows after any monster that walked near me. The only thing better than the creative puzzle solving and beautiful environments is the fact that this game only works so well because Zelda is the protagonist.
Between the unique raid maps, various crew builds, and sea monsters to summon (yes, you get to unleash a Kraken), every run feels like a new adventure. It’s a game that you can easily lose hours in, and the depth of customization keeps things interesting even after multiple raids.
An extremely addictive and satisfying core gameplay loop combined with exceptional gameplay, immersion mechanics, an outstanding setting, and a strong, fitting visual style make this an indie title for the history books. There is nothing like this out there, and I'd be shocked if there's anything like this again.
In the world of city-builder games, the Frostpunk franchise stands proudly at the snow-capped peak of Mount Everest in terms of what definitively is the most all-around challenging IP in the genre. Frostpunk 2 easily helps it keep that title in a tight-gloved fist, with its incredibly intricate game design and uncompromising difficulty that is best suited for the most fearless and ambitious of Stewards.
