5.5 / 10.0 - Shadow of the Depth
May 1, 2024

Shadow of the Depth shows promise amidst its early access voyage, but it’s navigating through murky waters. The addition of new characters and weapons holds potential, but a clearer roadmap is essential to steer the game in the right direction. Nevertheless, the diverse characters and engaging hack-n-slash rogue-like elements make it a journey worth embarking on for those brave enough to dive into the depths.

Despite offering a level editor, Halver’s main game comprises a mere 48 short levels, which might leave some players feeling shortchanged. Although the roguelike format of Snow Day is designed to keep you coming back for more, I found myself struggling to find a reason to return to reply after beating a level. There are some cosmetic items to unlock and maybe a few weapons you didn’t try out, but that’s not enough. Snow Day is a blast to play, and you can’t beat the price! But it could use a bit more to keep players engaged for the long haul. With some extra content and incentives to keep players coming back, it has the potential to be a standout game. As it is, it’s a great option for fans of South Park and roguelike games, but it might not keep you hooked for a long time. Overall, it’s a solid choice, but with a few tweaks, it could be even better.

6.5 / 10.0 - Highwater
Mar 25, 2024

Highwater falls short of its lofty ambitions. The story elements and exploration lack depth, failing to evoke any emotional resonance. Taxi Life stands out as a compelling fusion of simulator and arcade driving game, with fun challenges that feel right out of Crazy Taxi or Midtown Madness, providing players with a unique and immersive journey through the streets of Barcelona while managing their taxi empire, I just wish it had slightly better controls, as this is the main focal point of the game, and takes away from the experience greatly. The game’s price tag at $30 USD is also a bit more than I’d pay for a game like this, and to me feels like it would do better in the $14.99-$19.99 range. And don’t get me started on the overpriced DLC packs.

Alone in the Dark, despite its aspirations, falls short of delivering a cohesive and captivating experience. The disjointed narrative, coupled with lackluster gameplay mechanics, detracts from what could have been a triumphant return to form. While it may offer moments of enjoyment, it ultimately fails to recapture the essence of its predecessors, leaving fans yearning for the chilling embrace of true horror. As the credits roll, it becomes apparent that Alone in the Dark, for all its ambition, remains but a shadow of its former self, a tantalizing glimpse into what could have been.
