Copycat shoots for the stars with its narrative ambitions, delivering an emotional, introspective experience that will have you reflecting on your relationship to the animals and people in your life. It goes to some truly unexpected places, some of which are questionable, but all of which are compelling. Despite the pieces not quite coming together in perfect harmony, this is an experience that will stick with you for a long time.
If you own or take care of a pet – or if you have kids who’d like a pet – do yourself a favor and play Copycat in one sitting. Make sure you have tissues ready.
Copycat is without a doubt one of the biggest surprises of the year. The game, which appeared out of nowhere, stole my heart and reminded me about the important values in life that we should always keep in mind.

Copycat is a uniquely cat-perspective narrative game that tells a heartwarming and, at times, heart-wrenching story that cat lovers and owners should resonate with. However, it is a bit weak on the gameplay side and will often hold your hand and guide you through the story it wants you to experience.
Ultimately, Copycat is a game about loss, heartbreak and finding a place to call home even when it feels like there isn’t one. Despite the simplistic design, Copycat takes minor moments and makes them bigger than a game about a cat should be able to. The care and attention to tone and messaging has made this one of the best games I’ve played in 2024. It’s the perfect addition to the library of any narrative game fan.
Without a doubt, Copycat is a masterpiece of narrative-driven gaming, featuring a story that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you emotionally invested. It is a game that is deeply Australian yet universally relatable, and one that will leave you still crying, long after the credits roll.
With gnomes to break and dark themes to navigate, Copycat is quick and simple, yet emotional, narrative about love and loss.
