Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, let me tell you, has a whole lot to offer. It’s capable of drawing you into a full-blown JRPG fever, captivating you with its fantastically recreated environments that evoke the original experience, making you smile with its more lighthearted moments, and bringing you back down to earth with its more tragic ones.

6.5 / 10.0 - Lords of Exile
Feb 19, 2024

The pixel art has been crafted with exceptional care, striking a balance between 8-bit and 16-bit aesthetics. This gives the game a more appealing visual identity than titles that strive to faithfully replicate the limited color palettes of hardware such as the NES.

The difficulty is fairly high, even on the lowest setting. While the game’s mechanics aren’t among the most complex in the genre, completing a stage on a single credit will require practice. But what kind of shmup would it be without a few profanities screamed at the top of your lungs?

Fans certainly deserved a product with more soul and a little more care, both to rein in its appalling presentation and to give the gameplay the attention it deserved. A truly missed opportunity.

All three games have their share of more and less successful cases. Nevertheless, regardless of the quality of the writing itself, they are always capable of captivating and entertaining the player. The flow of events is sometimes heightened for dramatic effect, only to give way to bursts of uncontrollable laughter thanks to the lawyers’ animations, with each character boasting a unique and wonderfully over-the-top design.

Visually, the game features generally pleasant backgrounds, with some particularly impressive bursts of color and detail in the later stages. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the audio. The soundtrack feels as though it has been left behind in the Mega Drive era, featuring somewhat tinny, overly repetitive tracks that can become downright grating at times.

8 / 10.0 - The Invincible
Dec 6, 2023

As already highlighted in the introduction, the game is a remarkably faithful adaptation of Stanisław Lem’s novel, first published in 1964. The decision to give it a strong visual identity rooted in that specific historical period was therefore undoubtedly a winning choice.

6 / 10.0 - Air Twister
Nov 7, 2023

An experience that is simply too basic, lacking advanced mechanics and, ultimately, feeling excessively dated. A product aimed squarely at a niche audience of gamers who love Yu Suzuki’s work and remain trapped in a nostalgic loop they either can’t—or simply don’t want to—escape.

7 / 10.0 - VISCO Collection
Nov 1, 2023

If you don’t have an emotional connection to the Neo Geo and arcades in general, there’s little here to pique your interest. Retro gaming enthusiasts, on the other hand, can add another small piece to their collection, with many (though not all) of Visco’s titles represented.

All the titles are perfectly playable, with improved frame rates compared to the original releases, along with a handful of digital extras for fans of the series to explore. Ultimately, when the choice is between having the collection available on modern consoles and not having it at all, we’ll gladly take the former.

The game features a wide variety of mechanics, all of them interesting, intuitive, and sufficiently varied, ensuring that the experience never feels cumbersome or repetitive. A word of praise also goes to the art direction: while the visuals are fairly basic by the standards of anime-inspired games, they are nevertheless elevated by a number of well-judged and effective stylistic choices.

9 / 10.0 - Akai Katana Shin
Oct 7, 2023

Cave’s meticulous attention to sprites and animations is always a joy to behold and experience. Despite Akai Katana having first hit the market more than ten years ago, it remains an enjoyable and impressive title even after all this time.

Even die-hard anime fans may find themselves letting out an exasperated sigh at the story’s screenshot-based presentation, which leaves them with little opportunity to actively play during the various stages of Dai’s adventure.

8 / 10.0 - Eternights
Sep 26, 2023

Eternights presents itself as an action RPG heavily inspired by Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. The apocalyptic style of those series, blended with contemporary urban environments, is palpable throughout the experience.

8 / 10.0 - Gunbrella
Sep 19, 2023

The game is enjoyable and flows smoothly, moving seamlessly between story moments, dialogue, frantic action sequences, and well-crafted platforming sections to deliver a well-rounded experience. Unfortunately, it never reaches truly memorable heights, and just when it starts to become genuinely fun, it comes to an end.

9.5 / 10.0 - Fading Afternoon

The melancholy that permeates every aspect of Yeo’s work is its defining feature, and it comes as no surprise to find it here as well, refined through experience and shaped by his collaboration with the artists who contributed to the project.

10 / 10.0 - Final Fantasy XVI
Jul 5, 2023

Alongside its refined and enjoyable gameplay, the game also features more heavily scripted sequences in which Clive, taking on the form of Ifrit, is called upon to battle other Dominants. During these encounters, the adrenaline is pushed to the limit through masterful use of camera work and direction. Fully embracing the “J” in JRPG, the game also gives free rein to the more cartoonish approach so characteristic of anime.

10 / 10.0 - Street Fighter 6
Jun 12, 2023

Designed specifically with newcomers in mind, Capcom introduced the “Modern” control scheme. While purists may find its simplicity downright “offensive,” it makes the game far more approachable for those stepping into the fighting game genre for the first time. In doing so, it lowers what was once an almost insurmountable barrier to entry, allowing everyone to simply have fun.

The four titles on offer are enormous fun, and Gaiares alone would be worth the purchase. Adding three more shmups that are almost unknown in the West is the icing on the cake: a perfect package for retro nostalgics like me who want to play everything humanity has produced in this genre.

It’s clear that the developers envisioned a more methodical and deliberate approach to progression. However, the inability to react quickly to certain situations, coupled with questionable hitboxes, results in an overly cumbersome system that can be deeply frustrating.
