Silver Pines is an excellent game, built on the genre’s core foundations and successfully translating its defining mechanics into a 2D, Metroidvania-style structure without ever feeling disjointed. Where it falls short, however, is originality: there isn’t a single idea that feels truly unique or distinct. This applies not only to the gaming landscape, but also to its cross-media influences, which the developers seem to have mined with all the subtlety of a stick of dynamite.

Two cult CAVE shoot ’em ups return to modern platforms with Muchi Muchi Pork! & PunkSweets Boosted, bringing together two colorful, challenging, and mechanically deep arcade experiences. This collection is a must-have for hardcore STG fans. Be warned though, its demanding difficulty makes it better suited to experienced players than newcomers to the genre.

There’s always a hunger for cyberpunk worlds, and while Cyberpunk 2077 has undoubtedly dominated the scene, there’s still plenty to discover in Nivalis Nights (and, by extension, Cloudpunk, if you haven’t played it yet). What makes it particularly interesting is that it offers a more laid-back experience, with a strong narrative and investigative focus, while also bringing management-sim elements into the mix to add a little extra spice.

We’re looking at a solid survival horror that relies heavily on the atmosphere and the classic conventions associated with Konami’s iconic survival horror series. Fans of the genre, and especially of the series, shouldn’t miss it, though they shouldn’t expect an experience on par with the original titles. Whether you’ve played Truxton or not, Truxton Extreme is a must-have addition to any STG enthusiast’s library. There’s plenty to read and lots of choices to make; the dice won’t always be in your favor, and you’ll often lose battles, but there’s no need to worry. As in any good gamebook, you can simply “rewind time” a little to return to an earlier point in the adventure and make a different decision.

If you’ve only played the more recent Tekken games and have never taken a look at the original, the Arcade Archives 2 version is truly the perfect way to rediscover the series’ roots, especially considering its relatively affordable price. You don’t need to have played the original Formation Z to appreciate this remake and, despite its simplistic formula and dated approach, it’s still an enjoyable shoot ’em up that makes no attempt to reinvent the wheel. The price may be a little steep for what it offers, but genre diehards can consider picking it up without too many regrets.
