Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters is a sequel done right. It builds on the original’s strong foundation, adding content and refining its ideas into an experience that looks and plays better. Tamsoft has put together one of the most unique and fun soccer games ever made, blending the real-life sport with the over-the-top anime it’s based on.
Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters successfully combines story and soccer to create an experience that scratches an itch which titles such as FC don’t manage to do. While it improves the on-pitch action, story segments remain the same as the original, lacking inspired visual direction.
It almost feels like, rather than comparing Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters to an EA FC game, you'd be better off thinking of it as Tekken played 11-a-side. The only thing I'm holding off on judging is the online mode; otherwise, it's genuinely hard not to recommend it to anyone looking to scratch that arcade-style football itch.

Six years after *Rise of New Champions*, we were looking ahead to *Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters* as a game that promised to elevate a formula full of good intentions. Unfortunately, Tamsoft tries to reinvent this formula a bit too hastily to deliver a fully polished gameplay experience. While the fan service in the story is a delight, the exhilarating nature of the matches, which we love so much in the manga and anime, is missing. The game has enough to satisfy even the most die-hard fans, but it will need to go back to the drawing board to deliver an experience worthy of the legend.

With Captain Tsubasa 2 World Fighters, Tamsoft has evolved the arcade formula of the first installment by adding mechanics like the new parry and the Chain System, which enrich the gameplay and make it much deeper than its predecessor. The only disappointment is the lack of additional content and a few flaws that, at least in part, we hope can be fixed with post-launch support.

Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters can be pretty fun (albeit a bit repetitive) when you're actually on the pitch, but it keeps getting in its own way with an excessive focus on a poorly written story, while its lack of content doesn't help either.
Captain Tsubasa 2 expands upon its predecessor and brings a host of improvements, yet it still falls short of perfection, with notable flaws in areas such as player and ball physics. If you're a die-hard fan of Tsubasa or looking to relive a dose of nostalgia, it's worth giving this title a try, though perhaps at a more reasonable price down the line.
