Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters is a sequel done right. It builds on the original’s strong foundation, adding content and refining its ideas into an experience that looks and plays better. Tamsoft has put together one of the most unique and fun soccer games ever made, blending the real-life sport with the over-the-top anime it’s based on.
Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters successfully combines story and soccer to create an experience that scratches an itch which titles such as FC don’t manage to do. While it improves the on-pitch action, story segments remain the same as the original, lacking inspired visual direction.
It almost feels like, rather than comparing Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters to an EA FC game, you'd be better off thinking of it as Tekken played 11-a-side. The only thing I'm holding off on judging is the online mode; otherwise, it's genuinely hard not to recommend it to anyone looking to scratch that arcade-style football itch.

With Captain Tsubasa 2 World Fighters, Tamsoft has evolved the arcade formula of the first installment by adding mechanics like the new parry and the Chain System, which enrich the gameplay and make it much deeper than its predecessor. The only disappointment is the lack of additional content and a few flaws that, at least in part, we hope can be fixed with post-launch support.

Your opinion of Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters depends on whether you played the first game. If this is your first time with the series, then the on-screen action can initially feel overwhelming, but you'll come to enjoy the over-the-top arcade action when you come to grips with the systems at play. If you've played the first game, then you'll like the gameplay changes but hate the fact that the game's modes feel pared back. In the end, the game is good for those looking for a simpler experience, but it's a little disappointing for those wanting some of the depth from the first game.
Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters is a game with huge wasted potential. The title falters by focusing too heavily on the narrative, sidelining what should be its main draw: playing soccer. While the gameplay improvements have made matches more dynamic and heightened the importance of individual players on the pitch, the excessive loading screens, lack of Brazilian Portuguese support, and scarcity of game modes end up stifling the moments where the title truly shines.

Overall, Captain Tsubasa 2 - World Fighters is exactly what you would expect from a video game adaptation of Captain Tsubasa. Rather than trying to simulate realistic football, it focuses on the exaggerated action, impossible moves, and memorable moments of the anime, and it largely succeeds in doing so. By making good use of the series’ familiar characters and world, while also introducing a custom character and new story elements, the game offers more than simply retelling the same old events. However, the limited depth of some systems and uneven pacing keep World Fighters from being more than a good game. Still, for longtime fans, seeing Tsubasa’s signature shots and Hyuga’s powerful moves come to life in a video game makes for a fun and nostalgic experience, as long as you don’t approach it expecting a realistic football game.

To use a football analogy for CAPTAIN TSUBASA 2: WORLD FIGHTERS, imagine the first game as a team that went on vacation, returned for preseason training, and practiced hard, only to come back playing worse than before. The game is fun, the story is cool, and the gameplay improves on its predecessor. However, even its greatest strength, the gameplay, still needs more polish. Furthermore, compared to the previous title, there is significantly less content, the story is poorly paced, and our character feels like a "luxury extra" rather than a truly pivotal figure; plus, the game lost its Portuguese localization. Ultimately, the negatives outweigh the positives, leaving the impression of a step backward.
