Thomas Hugh's Reviews

I've been gaming since the atari 800XL and have played pretty much everything from 1985's 'Zorro' to present day titles. Literally thousands of games.
8.1 / 10.0 - Valfaris
Oct 12, 2019

Valfaris is a master class of action, platforming and pacing. Personally I'd love to see these guys use this formula in a Metroidvania.

From what I did play of Kingdom Come: Deliverance has left me with mixed feelings. I enjoyed the story and wanted to see if Henry became a great Knight and avenged his family, but at the same time, I found myself battling against the game's systems every time it gave me control. Warhorse Studios have created an ambitious world with Kingdom Come: Deliverance, unfortunately, it didn't deliver for me.

Fire Emblem Warriors turned out to be a genuine surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed. It's the best Warriors game yet.

Cars 3: Driven To Win is a good alternative if you are fed up with Mario Kart 8. However, at £63 (absurd current Amazon UK pricing!) it's hard to recommend right now when it is considerably cheaper on other platforms.

6 / 10.0 - Arms

ARMS is an interesting concept that unfortunately doesn't play as well as it should, and doesn't have enough content to justify a full priced title.

8 / 10.0 - Mr. Shifty

Mr. Shifty is a fantastic debut title from Team Shifty and a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch. I look forward to seeing what the developers come up with next.

FlatOut 4 Total Insanity is possibly the best game in the series to date. Some of the characters and tracks may feel a bit generic, but that doesn't detract from it being a more than competent racer that is seriously fun with a lot of unique features exclusive to the series.

8.5 / 10.0 - Lego Worlds
Mar 12, 2017

Lego Worlds is what I have always wanted from a Lego title. It's allowed my son and I to create builds we couldn't ever envision in the real world, let alone afford to buy all the bricks for!

9 / 10.0 - Nioh

Team Ninja now have a huge success on their hands with Nioh, and I can't wait to see what comes next. Small refinements made here could see this as the new king of Amrita.

Dragon Quest Builders is an excellent building sandbox woven together with JRPG threads. It allowed me to have fun with the gameplay in a genre I wouldn't usually care for.

This is the best Lego game since Lego Marvel Super Heroes and whether you are a Lego fan or Star Wars fan, or both; there is a lot to like and have fun with in Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

5 / 10.0 - Umbrella Corps

Umbrella Corps feels like a rushed, unfinished failed attempt at a third person multiplayer shooter. Don't waste your time.

8.5 / 10.0 - Street Fighter V
Feb 15, 2016

Street Fighter V is a hard game to rate in its current state. Die hard fans will probably be happy with what has shipped but for everyone else the content on offer at launch is rather thin.

Lego Marvel's Avengers is a fun solid title but is also another by-the-numbers Lego game. There isn't really any advancement to gameplay mechanics and this is a bit of a disappointment after how great Lego Marvel Super Heroes was. The story mode is a bit boring to play through and once again the real highlight of the game is free-roaming the world hubs.

The Deadly Tower of Monsters is one of the strangest games I've played in some time. It goes for a 1950's B-movie scifi aesthetic and completely nails it, it's just a shame that the gameplay is so simple making the overall package underwhelming.

Rainbow Six Siege is both exciting and disappointing. Finally a realistic team-based shooter but it doesn't feel like a full priced game and is marred by microtransactions. If your game is light on content compared to previous entries in the series and you still put in microtransactions, you are going to annoy the fan base, and if they are anything like me, assume all you want to do is milk players of their cash. That aside, there is a great base game here but it's just not enough.

The Rope Launcher feels like it should have always been in the game and horse drawn carriages are fun to drive and cause mayhem with. It's still Assassin's Creed, but these new options are a welcome addition to what was already dubbed a stale franchise. It will be interesting to see where the series goes now, as it can't go back and remove these new features.

If you like adventure and horror games or cheesy slasher flicks you'll be right at home with Until Dawn. It unashamedly uses every trope in the book but is so well developed that it will become the new standard that future adventure games are compared to. Overall I enjoyed it enough to play through again and see the alternate outcomes as well as find the missing collectibles.

Risen 3: Titan Lords - Enhanced Edition is a solid attempt at an open-world RPG that just falls short of being a great game. Overall this is the best title in what is otherwise a mediocre series.
