Chris Capel's Reviews

Professional writer (it says so on his card), in-between novel writing Chris J Capel has been writing about videogames for over ten years. From humble beginnings on LucasArts fansite The International House of Mojo Chris fulfilled his lifelong dream and joined the team on the UK's greatest ever gaming magazine, PC Zone, for their last two years of life. These days Chris can mostly be found at GameWatcher.com, the new name for the now fully PC-focused games site previously known as Strategy Informer. He writes reviews, features, editorials, previews, and the odd bit of news as well as create as many entertaining videos as he can get his hands dirty on. And yes, he'll finish that novel soon.
9 / 10.0 - BattleTech
Apr 24, 2018

Battletech is an addictive strategy game that smushes everything we love into one game, and dares us not to love it. It combines Firefly, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, XCOM, and giant Mechs punching each other and shooting laser beams.

If The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit cost a bit of money, we'd still highly recommend it. The fact that it's totally free means it's elevated to a must-play, even if you have no plans on playing Life Is Strange 2 - and if you're considering it, play this now. Any minor quibbles we might have, like some interactive points not being obvious, drop away when you remember that it's free.

8.6 / 10.0 - Technobabylon
Jun 2, 2015

Technobabylon is one of the best adventures WadjetEye have ever published, and that's saying something. While the last two Blackwell games beat it by having slightly smarter and more realistic puzzles, Technobabylon still does them well and almost edges ahead by occasionally having multiple solutions.

8.5 / 10.0 - Dying Light

Dying Light is a very impressive game that's clearly had a lot of care and attention put into it.

While it has some minor foibles, and you undoubtedly need to have watched up to the end of the show's Season 3 to get what's going on, if you're a fan of the show you'll definitely love this. Telltale have tied themselves to Westeros brilliantly - now let's see if they can survive their Second Episode Is The Worst In The Season curse.

A worthy purchase certainly, but only if you're prepared to accept Far Cry 3.5 rather than Far Cry 4.

8.5 / 10.0 - Alien: Isolation
Oct 15, 2014

All these are just minor things however, and while they did drag the score down from the hallowed 9s they don't stop Alien Isolation from being a superb game and quite possibly the best Alien game ever (although Monolith's Aliens Vs Predator 2 comes close). At the very least SEGA have redeemed themselves and the franchise. Alien Isolation is a nerve-wrecking, stomach-twisting, bowel-moving, edge-of-your-seat experience and is unlike every other game out there. Now this is true "survival horror".

The game took me about 11 hours to plough through on Normal ("Bring 'Em On"), and with two higher difficulty modes and plenty of secrets to find that can unlock even tougher modes (like Iron Man) there's a lot of replay value - and with that early timeline-altering choice I'll definitely be playing it at least once more. If you've been depressed at the way the FPS genre has declined buy Wolfenstein: The New Order right now and put a Nazi-killing smile on that face.

It's a good, fun, entertaining extra bit of Dragon Age Inquisition, and if that doesn't excite you then, well, you don't need it.

While in my opinion it has a few flaws that hold it back from true all-time-classic status Divinity: Original Sin is an excellent, beautifully designed and engaging RPG that absolutely never gets boring.

Fallout 4 is an amazing game that I doubt anyone will be disappointed by, but it's not unique. And I still prefer New Vegas.

Banner Saga 2 may be just the next part of Stoic's ongoing tale but basically everything has been improved.

Nevertheless for this Dragon Age fan Trespasser was a hugely satisfying end to Inquisition, and the final choice alone will have huge ramifications. Roll on Dragon Age 4.

The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone may skirt the line between DLC and Expansion Pack by merely adding more of what was already in Wild Hunt, but gets away with it by being sizeable and awesome. The story, quests, characters, choices, twists, gameplay and wild adventures on offer are well worth the extra money, and the return of Shani is a neat bonus for fans who have been with the series since the first game. If you're not completely sick of The Witcher 3 then it's well worth getting Hearts of Stone since the content here is some of the best and most memorable in the entire series.

The final episode of Telltale's Game of Thrones story is the strongest since the first, with everything coming to a head, all your terrible choices coming back to haunt you, and a few major excruciating ones left to finish things off. However the lack of any real resolution robs the season of feeling like a complete game. Moreover it still shares a lot of the weaknesses of the season as a whole, including the now decidedly unimpressive game engine and the absence of any witty character conversations (that are the hallmark of the show and books). Telltale still tell a good tale, but I think Game of Thrones will go down as the moment they bit off more than they can chew - or at least a licence they can't quite replicate. Still, cracking final episode chums.
