Shape of the World does not follow the rigid tenets of most games. What Shape of the World proposes is rather a relaxation of the senses thanks to a skillfully-crafted abstract and psychedelic art style which does a very good job at immersing the player into a different state of mind. Pity that it does not propose more of that, as Shape of the World feels too short and with too little interaction, for a game that gets its sensory component right.

6 / 10 - Titan Quest
Sep 30, 2018

Titan Quest lands on the Nintendo Switch as a remaster of a game that originally saw the light of day twelve years ago. While its visual environment is certainly outdated, despite some technical improvements, Titan Quest's gameplay still retains some interest and its local and online multiplayer modes are definitely enjoyable. Despite all that, the game still feels fairly repetitive and it does not stand on the top of the scale of action RPG.

Minecraft: Story Mode - Season Two brings a competent work to the Nintendo Switch with an improved combat system, a simple but humorous plot and an overall good acting work. Nevertheless, the game doesn't fully stand out, as its adventure is rather superficial and the challenge level is not as high as it could be, with a lack of more eye-grabbing moments and some unsolved technical issues.

Hiragana Pixel Party is a rhythm game that ends up not standing out as such but rather thanks to its educational component, centered on the teaching of japanese characters. While its rhythm-based gameplay is too simple and shallow for its own good, the educational side is surprisingly fun and the game's retro aesthetics grant it a rather alluring look.

6 / 10 - Sparkle 2 EVO
Nov 15, 2017

It's at relaxing while advancing along the evolutionary scale that Sparkle 2 EVO performs best, thanks to its simple design and to the implementation of the game's evolution and survival concepts. As a more competitive piece of gaming, it does less good as the matching mode is a bit of a disappointment and the game's actions often feel inconsequential to the player.

FIFA 18 on the Switch brings the series back to Nintendo and with this delivery, it achieves some accolades while leaving stones unturned. If the gameplay is perfectly fluid and playing FIFA on the go is a very welcome feature, it also suffers from several technical limitations which put it one step behind other versions of the game. Harder to understand is the absence of online play against friends and of other functionalities found in other deliveries of FIFA 18.

Fire Emblem Warriors on the New Nintendo 3DS attempts to recreate the experience that can be found on the Nintendo Switch and while its main objectives are fulfilled, there are several elements which inevitably fell behind. The lack of a cooperative mode is difficult to understand and technically, there are many details that feel very much downgraded. While overall the experience is mostly the same, these differences shouldn't be entirely ruled out when it comes to making a decision.

Phantom Trigger certainly has the elements to be a good and unique game on its own, thanks to its unmatched atmosphere and combat system. However it quickly loses out due to the short term repetitiveness that quickly takes over, as well as to the lack of variety of its enemies and goals, which mean that ultimately the game's promises go unfulfilled.

6 / 10 - Vostok Inc.
Feb 5, 2018

Vostok Inc. has the merit of trying to merge point & click mechanics with those of a shooter game. By itself, this is something that should be commended. The problem is it doesn't really achieve anything significant with this effort and the shooter component feels shallow and uninspired. At the same time, the game ends up becoming too repetitive and doesn't have much to offer once its novelty factor dissipates.

6 / 10 - Atomine
Jul 10, 2018

ATOMINE does not bring any big surprise to the Nintendo Switch catalogue. It's a twin-stick shooter and a competent one at that. If its plot is somewhat original, the rest of the game is not. Thanks to its minimalist but not any less stylish visuals and variety of weapons and enemies, ATOMINE is enough to keep the players amused for some time but it doesn't take long until it starts feeling too repetitive and too demanding on the player's energy.

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers is certainly a competent game at what it does best: classic 2D fighting gameplay and plenty of online possibilities to extend the game's lifespan. It also adds two modes that bring no added value whatsoever and its selling price is completely out of line with what is to be expected from a new version of a game that is over twenty five years old.

6 / 10 - Late Shift
Jun 10, 2018

Late Shift brings back the interactive movie genre, based on the use of the Full Motion Video, to the current age with all the technical advancements that it brings in terms of visual improvements. However and while the actors' interpretations are competent and there are plenty of choices, they end up having less of an impact on the plot that it would be legitimate to expect and the game's own level of interactivity feels very narrow.

6 / 10 - 1-2-Switch
Mar 10, 2017

Featuring a number of fun minigames, 1-2-Switch offers some value in terms of quality and future potential of Nintendo's new system. This ends up getting lost amidst the game's high retail price, the lack of interest of several of its minigames and the absence of features for one player, meaning that a lot of the game's ambition remains unfulfilled and only those who can always fully take advantage of the multiplayer features will be able to enjoy (some of) the minigames in 1-2-Switch.

Sky Force Anniversary is an interesting game by itself, with a simple and accessible gameplay as well as a very competent visual environment. Where it loses out, though, is when it's measured in terms of its rather short content and repetitive settings, not to mention that it doesn't stand up to its brother game of the same series.

Sadly the scope for this game is severely limited by the lack of online sharing of levels, which was one of the main qualities of the original and overall this feels like a downgrade. It's still an appealing title and it succeeds in what it offers but it's impossible not to shrug off a certain sense of disappointment.

6 / 10 - I Am Setsuna
Apr 14, 2017

I Am Setsuna does not reinvent the wheel of JRPGs and sticks to a formula which intends to put a smile on longtime fans of the genre by using several elements of the 16 and 32-bit era. That being said, it falls easily into a repetitiveness cycle, especially on its visual component and its plot and characters could really use more inspiration and magic, despite the quality of its combat system.

Apr 15, 2015

Gets several points right, especially its artwork and visual environment. There's a lot of content to unlock and its difficulty curve is balanced enough. Where it fails is on providing a more captivating gameplay, as the game forces the players to constantly look down to their GamePads, wasting time in the process.

Sparkle Unleashed is a simple but competent puzzle game that is mostly based on a very tested formula, and there's nothing wrong with that. While the game does not attempt to stand above all its peers, what it features proves sufficient to provide for some simple fun. Where Sparkle Unleashed disappoints is on how quickly it begins to feel rather repetitive, especially for more experienced players with more exposure to other works.

Unfortunately, the extra time it took to get on the Wii U did not lead to improvements over the other versions and some technical issues remain unaddressed.

6 / 10 - Crimsonland
Dec 6, 2017

Crimsonland is plentiful in action, weapons and all sorts of bonuses and additional elements that will keep its players amused, especially if there are four of them. What it does less well is its level design, which feels repetitive and it lacks something innovative that would let it stand out.
